Michael McCormick

A Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America since 2002, Michael McCormick's research and teaching focus upon the historiography, politics, and economic history of the Merovingian and Carolingian world. Currently, he leads a cross-disciplinary research initiative on the history of the late Roman empire, integrating textual studies with archeological and physical scientific approaches to diet, disease, and the impact of climate upon ancient and medieval populations. He is the author of a number of books, including Eternal Victory: Triumphal Rulership in Late Antiquity, Byzantium, and the Early Medieval West(Cambridge University Press, 1986), Origins of the European Economy: Communications and Commerce, A.D. 300-900 (Cambridge University Press, 2001), and Charlemagne's Survey of the Holy Land (Harvard University Press, 2011). Prof. McCormick is chair of Harvard's Initiative for the Science of the Human Past, and a member of the Steering Committee for the Ph.D. Program in Byzantine Studies.
