Andy is a PhD candidate in the Department of History. His dissertation research focuses on family wealth, economic behavior, and social status in 10th-13th century Byzantium. He is interested in the history of economic life and thought, premodern fiscal states, and organizational sociology. He is also curious about the afterlives of Byzantium in modern identity construction in the eastern Mediterranean. Prior to coming to Harvard, his projects focused on the performance of religion in military settings in Byzantium and the advisory dimension of Emperor Leo VI’s military manual, the Taktika.
