Alexander Riehle

Alexander Riehle is a scholar of Byzantine literature whose work addresses epistolography, rhetoric, performance and gender. He is the editor of A Companion to Byzantine Epistolography (Brill, 2020) and has co-edited three further volumes: a collection of essays on late Byzantine history and culture in honor of Franz Tinnefeld (Koinotaton doron, De Gruyter, 2016), Epistolary Poetry in Byzantium and Beyond. An Anthology with Critical Essays (Routledge, 2021) and a Festschrift for Albrecht Berger (Anekdota Byzantina, De Gruyter, 2023). His first monograph comprises an edition with translation and literary-historical analysis of the letter-collections of the late Byzantine aristocrat Nikephoros Choumnos (De Gruyter, 2023). He is currently working on a history of women’s writing in Byzantium.
