Harvard medievalist honored by University of Antwerp
Daniel Lord Smail, Frank B. Baird Professor of Medieval History, has been awarded the degree of Doctor in Arts honoris causa by the University of Antwerp, in recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of medieval urban history and material cultural studies. Professor Smail is the author of numerous books, including The Consumption of Justice: Emotions, Publicity, and Legal Culture in Marseille, 1264-1423 (Cornell University Press, 2003), On Deep History and the Brain (University of California Press, 2007), and Legal Plunder: Households and Debt Collection in Late Medieval Europe (Harvard University Press, 2016); he also is the creator and lead investigator for the Documentary Archeology of Late Medieval Europe (DALME), an online curated database of late medieval inventories and their contents. In conjunction with his doctoral award ceremony, held on 30 March 2023, Professor Smail led a masterclass on "The Imagined Space of the Late Medieval Urban Household" for faculty and students at the University of Antwerp.
