 Professor Pertile is a scholar of medieval and modern Italian literature, with special interest in the works of Petrarch and Dante and the early history of the novel. He is the editor of the *Cambridge History of Italian Literature* (1996) and author of *La puttana e il gigante: Del Cantico dei Cantici al Paradiso terrestre di Dante* (Longo, 1998) and *La punta del disio: Semantica del desiderio nella Commedia* (Cadmo, 2005).
