Professor Russell's scholarly interests encompass the broad sweep of Armenian language and literature, with a particular focus upon religious literature and the lyric tradition in classical and medieval Armenia. He is the author of a number of books, including Zoroastrianism in Armenia (Harvard University Press, 1987) and Yovhannes T'lkuranc'i and the Mediaeval Armenian Lyric Tradition (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1987), and the editor and translator of The Heroes of Kasht (Kasti K'Ajer): An Armenian Epic (Caravan, 2000) and Bosphorus Nights: The Complete Lyric Poems of Bedros Tourian (Harvard University Press, 2006).
