During the ethnic cleansing in Asia Minor that included the 1922 burning of Smyrna (İzmir), Greek-speaking refugees fled to cities in Greece and around the world, including the Greek Orthodox community in Somerville. With them they brought their own traditions of Byzantine chanting, infused with irrepressible joy and transcendent beauty.
