 

#  Harvard medievalist honored by University of Antwerp

[Daniel Lord Smail](https://scholar.harvard.edu/smail/home), Frank B. Baird Professor of Medieval History, has been awarded the degree of Doctor in Arts *honoris causa* by the University of Antwerp, in recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of medieval urban history and material cultural studies. Professor Smail is the author of numerous books, including *The Consumption of Justice: Emotions, Publicity, and Legal Culture in Marseille, 1264-1423* (Cornell University Press, 2003), *On Deep History and the Brain* (University of California Press, 2007), and *Legal Plunder: Households and Debt Collection in Late Medieval Europe* (Harvard University Press, 2016); he also is the creator and lead investigator for the *[Documentary Archeology of Late Medieval Europe](https://dalme.org/project/overview/)* (DALME), an online curated database of late medieval inventories and their contents. In conjunction with his doctoral award ceremony, held on 30 March 2023, Professor Smail led a masterclass on "The Imagined Space of the Late Medieval Urban Household" for faculty and students at the University of Antwerp.
